The DCP Kenya team comprising the Institute for Climate change and Adaptation and the African Conservation center joined the other partners for the project annual conference at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) in Beijing China between 1st and 7th September 2019. The conference was aimed at sharing the progress toward meeting the overall project goal by each partner and visiting various project sites in China for fieldwork and lesson learning.

The first two days of the conference comprised presentations of progress reports by each partner. The DCP Kenya team made a presentation of different project components being undertaken in collaboration with other external stakeholders from the government, the private sector, civil society and the academia in Kenya. The rest of the days comprised of field visits and discussions with key partners in China. The team’s first stop was at Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Science (HASS); a high-tech agricultural park in Harbin.

The team further visited the Chinese Agricultural Research Systems experimental center in Qiqihar. Here a variety of crops are grown under controlled conditions simulating different climatic and biological conditions. The crops are then disseminated to local farmers to support food production and food security efforts on China.

Finally, the team gathered at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Qiqihar on the final day for the final team meeting. Different country teams discussed and agreed on their impact pathways and progress towards meeting the project objectives. The Kenya team made up researchers from Kenya, China and the UK developed a draft impact pathway and research outputs which included individual discipline-specific papers and the overall set of papers drawing on the multidisciplinary background of researchers in the team.

The next DCP mid-term conference will be held in Lenya in June 2019 to bring together key stakeholders and partners. Specific dates will be communicated int time.
